Wind energy co Variable Wind raises $2.5m

The start-up is developing better wind turbines, and adapting them for urban use.

Wind energy start-up Variable Wind Solutions Ltd. has raised $2.5 million in a round led by 21Ventures of the US. Aguagro Fund LP and current investor Brooks Keret Group also participated.

Variable Wind CEO Ian Kaplan and COO Gil Ziv founded the Rehovot-based company. The company is AquAgro's seventh portfolio company, and it now owns 8% of Variable Wind.

Variable Wind has two products in development. One is an electronic card for stabilizing the tension generated by wind turbines. This product aims to provide a more efficient solution to the gearboxes currently used by wind turbines.

The second product is an improved wind turbine that can be adapted for urban locations, where wind speeds are variable and low. These turbines are designed for roofs of homes, factories, or public buildings. The company hopes to have a product at a beta site by the end of this year.
